Congratulations to the team on winning AGC Build America Highway & Transportation Renovation ($100 million or more) Specialty Contractor Award for their outstanding work on the Caltrain Electrification Project!
This groundbreaking initiative represents a major leap forward in sustainable transit, marking the first time a commuter rail authority has transitioned from diesel to electric passenger service. MRS played a critical role in this transformation, leading the design and construction of railroad signaling modifications to support the new 25 kV electrification system along a 52-mile active corridor between San Francisco and San Jose.
Key elements of MRS’ scope included upgrading both wayside and crossing signaling systems to be compatible with an electrified environment, as well as enhancing communications to add capacity for the increased network load and additional SCADA sites.
Despite unforeseen challenges, the project spanned eight years, culminating in MRS completing its final cutover milestone a full month ahead of schedule. This accomplishment reflects the seamless coordination of 156 wayside locations, 52 crossings, and an impressive 1,000+ track circuits.
With electric trains entering full revenue service in September 2024, the Caltrain Electrification Project stands as a landmark achievement and MRS is proud to have helped bring it to life.
