MRS is actively working on a variety of On-Call tasks for the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS). One of the initial task orders was helping with optimizing operations. MRS initially commissioned its Track Driver eXtra (TDX) system for CATS in 2018 during the Blue Line Extension project. Recognizing the need to equip their new Maintenance of Way employees with a comprehensive understanding of the Train Control System, CATS approached MRS to conduct a two-day training session. The training enhanced their employees’ ability to identify and address field issues effectively. The initiative reinforced operational efficiency and strengthened the team’s capacity to maintain and troubleshoot its expanding rail system.
We also have modified the field operations at both terminals of the Lynx Blue Line—specifically at the I-485 Station and the University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC) Station. Previously, all trains were required to stop at red signals just before the platform and request permission from the dispatch center to bypass the signals and proceed. This process caused delays, as dispatchers often faced competing priorities, making it challenging to grant permissions promptly.
To address the issue, we reviewied and modifyied the hardware design provided by HNTB, updating the train control software to enable trains to receive clear signals and cab speeds from the train control equipment, and adjusting the field wiring to accommodate these software changes. Additionally, MRS conducted both static and dynamic testing to validate that the new functionality operated as intended.
Through these task orders and more, we’re proud to help CATS deliver Charlotte a safe, efficient, and reliable light rail system to help ease congestion in one of the most rapidly growing areas of the United States.
