Lynnwood Link Extension
Improving connectivity along Interstate 5.
Improving connectivity along Interstate 5.
Overview
This project extended Sound Transit’s light rail system from Northgate, WA, to Lynnwood, WA, adding 4.8 miles of double-track. The alignment runs through a narrow corridor adjacent to Interstate 5, including approximately 1.9 miles of direct fixation track on an elevated guideway and 3 miles of ballasted track on an at-grade guideway with retained cuts and fills.
Scope of Work
The project included constructing two stations, preparing infrastructure for a future third station, and building two large parking garages. Modern Railway Systems (MRS) provided systems construction, equipment installation, and testing for both at-grade and aerial guideways, including modifications to control systems at the Maintenance Facility and Operations Control Centers to ensure seamless integration with the extended rail network.
MCS provided engineering and commissioning services for the Communications Subsystems across four stations and three garages. The scope also included Traction Power Substations, Signal Bungalows, Emergency Access Points, and Trackway Intrusion Detection equipment along the wayside. Communications Subsystems included Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV), emergency and back-of-house phones, audio and visual public address systems, and access control.
Impact
The project enhanced regional transit connectivity, improved operational efficiency, and increased system capacity. By integrating advanced communications, signaling, and control systems, the Lynnwood Link Extension strengthened safety, reliability, and overall passenger experience across the extended corridor.
