SMART Commuter Rail (IOS - 1/1A)
Forging new paths in transit.
Forging new paths in transit.
Overview
This project involved the initial 41-mile operating segment of the new SMART rail system, extending from the Sonoma County airport to downtown San Rafael. The segment established foundational commuter rail service for the region.
Scope of Work
Modern Railway Systems (MRS) was responsible for procuring and installing the communications and cab signal systems, including integrated testing. The train control system implemented was Enhanced Automatic Train Control (E-ATC) and included 24 control points, 29 new crossing warning systems, 15 onboard train control sets, and upgrades to 34 existing crossing warning systems. MRS also designed, furnished, installed, tested, and commissioned the communications backbone, the Train Dispatch Software system (TDX), VOIP telephones, and CCTV. The CCTV system incorporated advanced analytics to detect tunnel intrusions and safely interlock the operation of a bridge.
Impact
The project delivered a fully integrated train control and communications system that enhanced safety, reliability, and operational efficiency across the initial SMART rail corridor. MRS’ systems ensured secure train operations while supporting real-time monitoring and responsive incident management.
