Transforming Caltrain with electrification.
As part of a once-in-a-generation upgrade, MRS modified Caltrain’s entire signal, communications, and grade crossing warning systems to enable the alignment to operate with electric passenger trainsets. This 52-mile project, spanning 17 cities and three counties from San Francisco to San Jose, marks a significant milestone for Caltrain. The transition from Diesel Locomotive Units to Electric Multiple Units required innovative designs, collaborative approaches, and the complete installation, testing, and commissioning of electrification systems throughout the corridor. These advancements significantly improved Caltrain’s service performance, efficiency, capacity, and safety, and reduced the line’s environmental impact.
MRS upgraded the current system to operate with an AC Electrified System and integrated it with a Positive Train Control (PTC) System. This extensive overhaul included full design, supply, electrified track circuit replacement, installation, and regulatory testing of new wayside signal cases and houses which encompassed over 1,000 routes. Additionally, we upgraded 54 existing constant warning grade crossings to support electrification operations.
